Lise Mary Magdalen Tallant Scrapbook

Created by Lise M. Tallant (1888-1972), who resided her entire life at 727 Lowerline Street in New Orleans, the scrapbook illustrates one young girl’s interests at the end of the nineteenth century.  Lise was the daughter of James R. and Lise M. Tallant and the aunt of New Orleans author Robert Tallant.  She never married.

The scrapbook was assembled in the late nineteenth century and includes color trading cards, advertisements, clippings, and greeting cards, reflecting the change in scrapbooking away from text-heavy books popular earlier in the century, to the colorful, image-heavy books of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. As seen in Ms. Tallant’s book, businesses capitalized on the interest in scrapbooking images by creating whimsical, colorful advertisements that would be retained and displayed by the recipient.
