Thomas Payne (T.P.) Thompson's Clippings Scrapbook

Basil Thompson’s father,  T.P. Thompson (1860 - 1924),  was a New Orleans businessman and bibliophile.  T.P was a member of the founding Committee of Organization for Loyola University of New Orleans and a founder of the Louisiana State Museum. A Southern Progressive, he was also known for his charitable and civic activities, including being the president of the board of the Touro-Shakespeare Almshouse for twenty years.  His campaign to bring the 1915 World’s Panama Exposition to New Orleans is cited as bringing both civic pride and an enormous amount of publicity to New Orleans as a viable place for national and international trade.  He collected an extensive working library that was housed in his home near the university at 1812 Calhoun Street.  His library focused on Americana with particular emphasis on materials related to Louisiana and the Lower Mississippi Valley Region.  It is currently held in the W. S. Hoole Special Collections at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
